My name is Barbara Waters and I am a Career Counselor. This position allows me to utilize my unique combination of education and work experience. Having worked in the for-profit, non-profit, and higher education environments gives me a clearer understanding of the career options available and the importance of transferability of skills.
My educational background consists of a B.A. in Elementary Education with a math/science minor, while my masters is in Instructional Systems Technology (designing instructional materials using technology), and my doctorate is in Higher Education Administration. Each position has given me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and skills. For example, because of my background in teaching and designing instructional materials I was able to design non-print instructional materials for medical students and then as the manager of a print shop assist customers in designing appropriate print materials. As a university recruiter and advisor for international students I not only used my writing and marketing skills but also my counseling and interpersonal skills. Finally, as an employee of a small Chamber of Commerce I worked with owners of small, medium and international businesses to grow their business and contribute to the local community.
Being a Career Counselor allows me to bring together all of the skills I have developed over the years and I find satisfaction in seeing a client “light up” when they realize options are available and that it is never too late to change careers.
Two areas of interest that also influence my life are, being involved as a Toastmaster (25+ years) and photograph what is around me, whether travelling abroad or visiting the local zoo.
This NCDA Career Development Facilitator (CDF) program has been a unique experience for me, and I am extremely grateful for my CDF Instructor’s willingness to share her knowledge, as well as her encouragement, and flexibility.
